Making $

I found this is in a business magazine. Yes, I was bored enough to flip through a magazine on how to make money. The spacing between each line in the body copy is regular, but the interaction of ascenders and descenders makes it appear uneven and cluttered in some areas. If this is was part of the design, I think it needs to look more purposeful. The reader gets distracted by the random interaction going on.

bubble, bubble, BUBBLICIOUS

so i went to frogbites the other day with my friend because we had to run out his meal plan before TCU gets more free money from our poor little wallets. anyway, i bought an entire box of bubblicious watermelon bubble gum, because, i mean who doesn't love bubblicious? it may not have the longest lasting flavor of the bubble gum family (thats why i also bought a box of extra) but it certainly has the great taste and bubble blowing abilities that other gums can't compete with and that bring you back to your childhood first bubble gum bubble. oh the memories. but when i was chomping down on a fresh piece of the watermelon 'licious...i saw that the wrapper had a great logo typeface that totally emulated the product perfectly. the big pink letter forms are 3D and bubble-like. how do you like that: real bubble letters! i thought it was a great typographic solution to a product name. so there you have it...just one more reason to love the amazing Bubblicious bubble gum.

i absolutely LOVE yellow tail, and coincidentally the typography on the label and their ad campaigns is what attracted me to the product in the first place. the simplicty of the typeface used in [ yellow tail ] gives the name a clean, sophisticated feeling; whereas normally, such open kerning would drive me insane, it really works with this typeface and is not distracting to me at all, but assertive. also the placement of the wine type below [ yellow tail ] is very well thought out and the less bold typeface does not compete with the name at all. the open leading and kerning of this "wine type" works very well with the label name itself. overall a very sophisticated and classy design. yay, for VINO!

i realized that my previous post was just of images on the body, and not actually type that enhanced the body, so i decided to change it, but still keep my favorite images. the tattoo across the persons mid-section, is my friend merry, she's great as you can tell. i really like the placement of the tattoo, it's boldness and the typeface she used. its very her. the tattoo on the inside of the arm is ky's and it says "konfusion". i really just like the overall design of this tattoo and how he has added ligatures to the text, its creates a nice flow and the illusion of confusion. also the way the text was written is very unique, very stylized and very him. lastly the two images, the clouds on the arm are ones i drew on ky, and he drew the tree on my leg. i really like these two because even though they are not "tattoos" they are expressions of art on the body, just not permenant. we both just started drawing, with no idea of what we were doing, just lines, and as we connected the lines and added color, this is what we ended up with: expressions of a moment of artistic inspiration captured on the human form. i also wanted to note just how different the art looks on a body than on a piece of paper.

Coorrroonnnaa

So I enjoy this simple clean design. Minimal use of compatable colors to get the message across ---mmmm bbeeerr! horray beer! Also the typeface is old and somewhat gothic. Also the gothic type compliments the san-serif type nicely that's also on the box. I think this image has been seen so much that it can be replicated to say other things and people will still recognize it as Corona. I guess I never really noticed the great design on this box and beer bottle until now....oh typography how you've changed me...

Hookah

This is a sign for the Velvet hookah lounge in Deep Ellum in Dallas, Texas. I think this sign was designed really well. I love the simplicity. I think its great how the "V" makes a hookah image without messing with the legibility. I also like the nice little touch of adding the dots over and under the letters...it gives it a middle-eastern feel.

Umlautie Dotties

I really appreciate the way this tat uses a simple letterform but can still look pretty interesting as a shape. This guy wanted to get a tattoo using letterforms he found beautiful, and I think he did a good job in choosing one. He chose to use a lower case "u" in a bold stroke using the font Meta. He added a spice of character to it using the Umlaut characters above the letterform to give it a nice elegant touch.

This typography tat is a matematical equation. The elegant black italic letterforms reference the clean legibility of text books. the equation itself is about some concept called mathematical singularity. here is what wikipedia has to say about mathematical singularity:

In mathematics, a singularity is in general a point at which a given mathematical object is not defined, or a point of an exceptional set where it fails to be well-behaved in some particular way, such as differentiability. See singularity theory for general discussion of the geometric theory, which only covers some aspects.

so that is the context if you were curious. The execution is nice as well as the placement. the tattoo is much more effective on the knuckles than if it were on the arm or back all together. neato.

this one falls in the stupid people category of my pie chart

Elisa you are officially banned from the church of dinosaurs for showing me this! I never noticed the "ligature" in the word box, and now that Elisa pointed it out... it bugs the hell out of me. Why you ask, because its not a ligature its a fish symbol. Its "Jack in the Box" not "Jack in the B-fish."

i like mustard, but not as much as this dude.

so this dude got a picture of a mustard bottle on his arm...odd? anyway, its not my decision. apparently he felt the need to label it as well, with a banner. "MUSTARD" assumes a typeface that is not the typical gothic or scripty font that we see on most body parts, but it does the bottle justice with its simple strokes and san serif feel. i like the design and typography...i just wouldn't put it on MY arm.
(that's a pretty mean looking mustard bottle by the way...i bet it's spicy mustard!)

Baker

This is some dudes stomach in Deep Ellum. I think the goofy, free formed, unpredictable shapes are perfect for its surroundings...random and strange. A more formal font would look out of place...I think he went as organic as he could without looking to chaotic!

Gypsy

This is on the wall on the side of gypsy tea room. To the left of this they paint the weeks calender and whos playing at the venue. I always walk by this wall and think its soo cool! I really like how the "00" are used as glasses on the man! It is such a great way to advertise without having to pay for space!

this is my body.

This is my friend Kelly. She's recently developed an addiction to getting new tattoos. When I asked her about her newest tat, she explained that her decision about the typeface was guided by a graphic designer friend of hers. They settled on one similar to American Typewriter, but a little rougher and less perfect. I love it - most tattoos I see have very elaborate and decorative fonts. This one's nice and simple.
I'd never get a tattoo, but if I did, I really feel like it would be a word or phrase - something typographic rather than image-oriented. This one's a great example of why that works so well!

Save Yourself From Hell

This is my friend Andrew's tattoo, it means save yourself from hell. It's a neat type face for a tattoo, some tattoo typefaces can be really cheesy and predictable, but I think this one is dimensional with the shading and such. But, if I got that tattoo I would freak out afterward because the word spacing is really open.

Tattoo

This tatoo is passionate and on fire...the only problem is that is probably will not last the entire week. The font is traditional "Tat-Type" but the overall design conveys the idea of Passion very well.
