comin to town!

This jewel poster was designed in the style of the lithograph and letterpress posters of the turn of the century. It feeds off of many graphic elements of the circuses of the time. Specifically, the ornate slab-serif typeface of "JEWEL." The gaudy, aggressive quality was meant to grab the attention of the common man as the circus traveled through american towns. It was also meant to imply the importance of this exciting event (big letters for a big deal). A psychological tool that is equally effective today.

i think that we still use this style in posters today because there is something exciting about the contrasts and scale changes that makes you look into and read the fine details of the poster. good example!

It's very Raef. And I definately agree that it's an exciting way of presenting an event. It provokes this kitchy feeling that anything can happen: elephants walking on tight ropes, men swallowing swords, trapeze artists risking their lives for applause.

nice poster, and very cool. definitely grabs the viewer's attention. there's lots of variation within it, but it's not too busy and works well.

I agree Lindsay...very Raef. It reminds me of the one project on Rosewood. (remember?) This poster is awesome! I love how the shapes inside the word 'Jewel' looks likes an illustration of jewels on a crown! The colors are also a nice modern take on an old style.

the heirarchy is a very prominent part in this piece, which makes sense because it is an event poster. the old feel to it enhances the feeling of authenticity and importance/.
